Admitting of water from a cold water reservoir into a flexible hose in the base of the reservoir leading to heating in a heating chamber is the working mechanism of electric drip coffee maker. Thermosiphon principle is used by the electric coffee maker which is also referred to as dripolator. When the water is heated it goes through an insulated rubber then to a spray head then to the ground coffee that is contained in a brew basket.

In order to prevent over heating in the metal tube by the water a thermostat is contained in the electric coffee maker. A stove top coffee maker is referred to as a moka pot which operates by passing hot water pressurized steam through ground coffee. As a type of coffee making machine is the vacuum brewer which uses the vacuum principle. The mode of working by a vacuum brewer is that it operates by heating the water in a lower vessel until expansion forces the contents through a narrow tube into an upper vessel containing the ground coffee.
